L refers to mantis size L1 being smallest just hatched L6/7 being very large nymphs after which they become sub adults and then adults. The adults are the final stage and often have wings and some species can fly well. Praying mantids should only travel through post if L2 or greater, hatchlings (L1) are unstable and can desiccate/die.
